Everything You Need to Know Before You Book (Ulpotha FAQ)

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book Your Yoga or Ayurveda Retreat 2026 at Ulpotha, Sri Lanka's original yoga retreat.

Booking a yoga retreat involves different questions from booking a hotel. Not whether the rooms are nice, but whether the place is right for you, if you’ll fit, whether it will do what you need it to. These are the questions people ask most often about Ulpotha, answered directly.

What exactly is Ulpotha?

Ulpotha is a yoga retreat in Sri Lanka that’s been running since 1997. It’s set on a 40-acre working farm in the dry zone of the island, surrounded by rice paddies, jungle, and an ancient man-made reservoir. It's an off-grid yoga and Ayurveda retreat; there’s no wifi, no electricity in the adobe huts, no windows, no doors and no televisions (hooray!). It’s not a hotel with a yoga studio, and it’s not a destination spa in the literal sense of the word. It’s a place built around slowing down, in a natural landscape that has been used for exactly that for a very long time.

When do the yoga retreats at Ulpotha run?

Our yoga retreats run from November through to March and June through to August, with each retreat led by a different visiting teacher. The theme of the retreat varies depending on who is there when you come and who is leading the retreat. If you’re planning to book a yoga retreat in 2026, the summer and autumn dates sell out earlier than people expect, so be sure to book early.

How much does a yoga retreat at Ulpotha cost?

Ulpotha is all-inclusive: accommodation in adobe huts, all-organic vegetarian meals, yoga twice daily, and access to an Ayurvedic doctor. Ayurvedic treatments beyond the first consultation are extra and should be budgeted for separately.

Ayurveda is an additional cost:

Santhushti (Happiness) 3 days – $250

Ashinsanaya (Benediction) 5 days – $375

Sanasuma (Satisfaction) 7 days – $500

Namskaraya (Salutation) 10 days - $ 750

Once you’re here at Ulpotha, you’re not spending money or making financial decisions throughout your stay, which in itself is relaxing, though you may want to buy something from our own shop during your stay. We have a tailor who comes weekly and can copy an item of clothing or making anything you like.

What’s included during a stay at Ulpotha?

Your yoga retreat at Ulpotha covers a shared or private adobe hut (the open-sided traditional Sri Lankan mud hut that serves as your room during your stay), all Ayurvedic vegetarian meals, morning and evening yoga with the visiting teacher, lake swims, and a consultation with the on-site Ayurvedic doctor. Not included: flights, travel insurance, Ayurvedic treatments beyond the initial consultation, alcohol (Ulpotha is dry), and any excursions. It's worth noting that you enjoy your coffee and don't think you can do without, then please do bring your own!

Do I need yoga experience?

No. The teachers at Ulpotha, with all levels, and the approach, slow and non-competitive, work for someone who’s never done a class as well as they work for someone who’s been practising for decades. You've come here to work on yourself, not be competitive with others. Many guests don't do yoga every day, others join in religiously; the choice is yours.

Is Ulpotha suitable for solo travellers?

Yes, and the solo retreat numbers in Sri Lanka at Ulpotha are higher than people expect. Around half the guests at any given retreat travel alone. The communal structure, shared meals, shared yoga sessions, and a small group mean you’re never isolated, but you’re also never obliged to socialise if you don't feel like it.

How do I get to Ulpotha?

Fly to Colombo. Ulpotha arranges transfers from the airport on Sunday mornings (the cost is USD 120 one way), if your flight arrives Saturday evening, then we recommend you stay the night in a hotel near the airport. The drive takes around 3.5 hours, through rice paddies and past ancient stupas, the landscape opening up as you head north.

What should I bring to Ulpotha?

Light cotton clothes, yoga clothes, a torch for moving around the property at night, any prescription medication, books, and a journal if you use one. Don’t bring work, there's no WiFi! Ulpotha asks guests not to use phones in communal areas, and there’s no wifi in any case. Most people find the first couple of days without a phone uncomfortable, and the two weeks that follow the clearest they’ve felt in a long time. A complete nervous system reset.

Is Sri Lanka safe to travel in 2026?

Yes. Sri Lanka has recovered substantially from the economic difficulties of 2022. The region where Ulpotha sits, the dry zone in the north-central province, is peaceful and remote. Standard advice applies: travel insurance, registering your trip with your country’s advisory service, consulting your GP about vaccinations. You'll also need a visa to visit Sri Lanka.

What about the Ayurveda at Ulpotha?

Ulpotha has an on-site Ayurvedic doctor and therapists who’ve been part of the retreat for many years. We have our own Ayurveda Centre in the heart of the jungle. The initial consultation is included in your booking and is a real consultation with the doctor who measures your dosha and constitution. This is the traditional Sri Lankan Ayurveda style. The treatments aren’t glamorous. They're authentic and traditional

How do I actually book Ulpotha?

Our website lists all retreats with dates, teachers, and availability. A deposit secures your place, with the balance due closer to arrival. The team will answer specific questions about individual dates and teachers. If you’re ready to book a yoga retreat 2026, find the dates that work for you and book or if you have other questions contact our booking manager Pri on bookings@ulpotha.com. For popular dates, don’t wait as the yoga retreats are limited to 25 guests. If you want a service that reads your preferences and anticipates your every need, then Ulpotha probably isn’t it. If you want two weeks somewhere that does something to you rather than for you, it very much is.
