When Is the Best Time for a Yoga Retreat in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but its two monsoons mean the “best” time depends on where on the island you are. Ulpotha sits inland in the north-central dry zone, at the foot of the Galgiriyawa mountains. It is a warm, sheltered pocket that stays welcoming across most of the year.

Ulpotha's two yoga retreat seasons

Ulpotha runs its yoga retreats in two windows: November to March and June to August. Each two-week retreat is led by a different visiting teacher, so the practice on offer shifts with the calendar. See who's teaching when on the retreats page, or browse the full circle of visiting teachers.

  • November to March lines up with the island's classic high season, when the south and west coasts are at their driest, so it is easy to pair a retreat with time at the beach.
  • June to August is the quieter, greener window. While the south-west coast sees its monsoon, the dry-zone interior where Ulpotha lies stays comparatively settled: a good time for a calmer, less-crowded stay.

Ayurveda, whatever the weather

Ayurveda runs right through both retreat seasons, and it's the part of a stay least tied to the weather. A consultation with the resident doctor, daily treatments and a Panchakarma programme don't depend on blue skies. The June to August window, when the south-west coast is at its wettest, is a particularly good time to come for the treatments. Hoping to visit outside the published dates? How long to stay

Retreats run Sunday to Sunday across two weeks, and it's possible to book a single week. Ayurveda treatments are an add-on chosen on the booking form: a 3-day taste suits a one-week stay, a 7-day course a two-week stay. When in doubt, message the team and they'll help you match dates, teacher and treatment.
