What to expect

An Ayurveda Day at Ulpotha

Ayurvedic treatments fold gently into the rhythm of a retreat day: a consultation, daily sessions of an hour or two in an open-air space, and the village quiet doing its slow work.

The rhythm

An Ayurveda treatment, folded into your retreat

Ayurveda treatments at Ulpotha are generally taken after the morning yoga session or before the evening one. For programmes of ten days or less, you'll have an Ayurveda treatment every day, each roughly one to two hours; longer programmes include rest days. A short treatment (less than the 7-day Sanasuma programme) allows time for preparatory therapies and perhaps inhalation; longer programmes may also include purgation, though the consultation decides.

You take your treatment in a quiet, private open-air space or treatment room where you hear the soft rustle of leaves and the sounds of village life drifting in. Warm oils, gentle pressure and slow, grounded movements help your body unwind after long flights, deeper yoga sessions or a day exploring the lake.

Ayurveda FAQ

Is Ayurveda included in the retreat price?

No. Ayurveda treatments are an optional extra on top of your stay, and you choose your treatment on the booking form.

How long a treatment should I book?

We recommend a 3-day Ayurveda treatment for a one-week yoga retreat and a 7-day Ayurveda treatment for a two-week stay. These can be pushed to a maximum of 5 and 10 days respectively, with some compromise on excursions, yoga sessions or complimentary massages.

Do I need a consultation?

Yes. A personal consultation with Dr Srilal shapes the personalised elements of every Ayurveda treatment and is critical to determining whether any elimination therapies are required.

When do the Ayurveda treatments happen during the day?

Treatments are generally taken after the morning yoga session or before the evening session, and last up to about two hours per day.

Can Ayurveda treat a specific condition?

Our resident doctor, Dr Srilal, specialises in psychiatric ailments and arthritis, and can advise on ailments from digestion and sleep to emotional temperament and skin disorders. Arthritis typically needs at least four weeks. Tell Pri when you book so she can pass your details to Dr Srilal.

What is Panchakarma, exactly?

Panchakarma is the set of elimination therapies. At Ulpotha the focus is on inhalation and purgation. See the treatments page for the full picture.

Can I come to Ulpotha just for Ayurveda?

Yes, though we highly recommend joining the yoga classes, which are included in your stay and supplement your treatment schedule.
