Accommodation

Life at Ulpotha is simple and in step with nature. The handmade adobe huts are made for deep rest and a close connection to the jungle’s rhythms.

Accommodation at Ulpotha

Open-air adobe huts, simple in design yet deeply comforting, offer you space to rest fully and feel closely connected to the natural world.

Adobe Hut at Ulpotha

Ulpotha offers 11 beautifully simple guest huts, each built using traditional wattle and daub. Open and airy by design, they provide both cosiness and a deep sense of being at one with nature. Inside, you’ll find comfortable beds with voluminous mosquito nets, cupboards, fresh water, towels, and a sarong to wear and take home. Every hut is hand-painted twice a year with natural coloured clays, reflecting the beauty of Sri Lankan village traditions.

With one or two exceptions, loos are kept separate from living areas, following local custom. The open-air showers let you bathe in cool water under the stars, while the toilets are modern and comfortable. All huts are allocated on a twin-share basis, offering a peaceful retreat in a setting that feels both grounding and restorative.

The adobe huts are made for deep rest and a close connection to the jungle’s rhythms. You’ll fall asleep to the night chorus, wake with the sun and breathe fresher air than you have in years. Sharing a twin hut is recommended and part of Ulpotha’s philosophy of community, connection, and embracing village life. It enhances the social, shared-retreat atmosphere, where guests bond, chat, and feel less isolated in the jungle setting. For a supplementary extra, though, you can take a hut for yourself.

There’s little need for modern distractions. Lanterns light the evenings, the breeze keeps you cool, and the real luxury is the stillness. Staying here means living lightly on the land and feeling part of its natural flow.

Showers & Bathrooms

Showers and bathrooms are located outside the huts and are occasionally shared with your neighbours, helping to preserve the authentic communal village atmosphere. Each shower, like the huts, is unique: outdoors, open-air, and built of stone. You’ll find handmade soap and fresh towels in your hut. The water is cool, fresh, and safe to drink. After treatments at the Ayurvedic Centre or on cool evenings, there is a lovely hot-water bathing area for you to use. The water has been gently heated in pans over the fire and poured into large clay pots, ready for you to scoop and pour. It’s simple, soothing and deeply satisfying, a return to the rhythm of nature and the kind of luxury that can’t be manufactured.

Bathroom at Ulpotha

Showers are open-air, so you can bathe under the stars, while the loos are modern and comfortable. All huts are twin-sharing and offer a quiet place to rest in a setting that feels grounded and genuinely restorative.

Washing is honest and uncomplicated. Showers are outdoors, open-air, built of stone, and shared. There’s no hot water. You wash with fresh, cool, silky water and simple handmade soaps, and it feels wonderfully clean.

You’ll have lanterns in your hut to guide you to the bathrooms after dark. Although you’ll live barefoot at Ulpotha, keep your flip-flops beside the bed for any night-time trips to the loo.
