Ancient Medicine, Living Practice: Ayurveda and Panchakarma at Ulpotha

Panchakarma is the cornerstone of classical Ayurveda. The name means “five actions”: a set of cleansing therapies designed to clear accumulated toxins, restore digestive fire and bring the body back into balance. It's less a spa treatment than a guided reset, taken slowly and under medical supervision.
Every Panchakarma programme combines preparatory therapies (the warm oil massages, herbal steams and baths most people picture) with elimination therapies, which do the deeper cleansing work. At Ulpotha the focus is on the gentler eliminations (inhalation and purgation); the harsher classical procedures are neither prescribed nor performed, and aren't necessary given the consistency of the programme here. You can read the full treatments and Panchakarma menu for the detail.
A basic Panchakarma runs about three weeks, with shorter treatment courses available from a few days upward for those with less time. Because the therapies build on one another, the programme rewards a longer, unhurried stay, which is exactly the pace of village life at Ulpotha.
There is no standard programme. Yours is shaped by a consultation with Ulpotha's resident Ayurvedic doctor, who reads your constitution (your balance of the three doshas) and tailors the treatments to you. If you're carrying a specific concern (digestion, sleep, joint health), mention it when you book so the doctor can suggest the right length and approach.
At Ulpotha, Ayurveda runs alongside the yoga retreats right through the season, and treatments are chosen as an add-on on the booking form. You don't need to be focused on the yoga to receive them. New to the whole idea? Start with Ayurveda at Ulpotha or see what an Ayurveda day looks like.
