As Ulpotha is effectively a retreat and we discourage people from just popping in, very few people in Sri Lanka know where it is. It is therefore important for you to download and print the directions that have been sent to you by separate link in case any problems arise with your transport to Ulpotha.

Though you could search for Ulpotha in Google Maps (under the name “Ulpotha: Retreat to the Extreme”), keep in mind that roaming charges will be expensive if you do not have a local sim card in your mobile. As well, the directions given in the link are for the best route – Google Maps can sometimes take you down small and inconvenient roads. But it is handy as a back up.

Please note that you will need to apply and buy your 30-day Tourist entry Visa for Sri Lanka before entering the country. The cost of the visa, if you apply online, is slightly cheaper than if you buy it at the airport upon arrival. You can also get it through travel agents and embassies/consulates. The address you'll need for your visa application is:

Ulpotha Ulpotha Watta
Embogama Nr Galgamuwa
Kurunegala District
Sri Lanka

Please note: You will not be allowed into the country if you do not have a return ticket, or a passport that is valid for at minimum 6 months following your date of entry.

For vaccinations, it is best to ask your doctor's advice. Recommended injections are a Tetanus booster and Hepatitis A. Your GP or travel centre may also recommend Malaria tablets. However Ulpotha is not a known malarial zone and if you intend to only visit Ulpotha and its surrounding regions then Malaria tablets are not necessary. This is however a very personal choice and it is up to the individual to make their own decisions on this matter.

Please bring a good torch & spare batteries or get a solar-powered torch (, a yoga mat (the ones we get here are not very good ones), a watch, some mosquito repellent and, if you are sensitive to bites, insect bite cream/antiseptic, and sunscreen.

Rubber flip-flops are sufficient for walking in Ulpotha, sneakers may be needed for exploring the nearby mountains and caves. A simple light white cotton outfit covering shoulders to knees is recommended for visiting the temples and don't forget your swimsuit. A rain jacket is useful during the rainy seasons. There’s a free laundry service for everything except for underwear, please don’t bring expensive clothing or jewellery.

There is no cash point near Ulpotha and we do not have the facilities to take credit cards and there is no ATM in the surrounding villages, so please bring along enough $/Euros /£, to pay for your taxi transfers and any extras (entrance fees to Cultural sites, extra meals/drinks during our excursion trip, extra massage ($80/per hour), clothing from our local tailor, souvenirs, etc….

If you wish to phone cheaply from Ulpotha and avoid expensive roaming charges, please follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your phone is un-simlocked before you leave your home country.
  2. Buy a Sri Lankan DIALOG sim card upon your arrival at the airport (which will only work in an unlocked phone) and buy a phone credit card. Additional credit can be bought from Nirosha in Ulpotha.
  3. Please do not use your phone in the Ambalama or main house, best reception is up by the tank.
  4. Keep your phone switched off to save battery power. We have a small solar charger for phones, iPods and cameras, but it cannot cater to laptops or tablets.

Only possible on an unlocked smartphone with your Sri Lankan simcard.
